American Community Service survey data for 2014 obtained from the U.S. Census as follows:

A. Prepare your Mac or PC

B. Download data from ACS Website

  1. Direct Firefox of IE browser to “TheDataWeb” site at http://thedataweb.rm.census.gov/index.html
  2. Click “Launch the App” link on lower right side of screen to launch the DataFerret Java app.
  3. When new window opens, enter your email address on the line provided (middle of page), then click “OK”
  4. When new window opens, click “Step 1” button (top left)
    • Click “American Community Services” key (left side of page)
    • When list drops down, click “Public Use Microdata Sample” key
    • When list drops down, click “2014” … then click “View Variables”
    • Check “Population” (middle of page) … then click “Search Variables” icon (bottom)
  5. When extensive list appears (middle of page), double click “PWGTP – PUMS person weight” … or click the “Browse Select Variable” button (top of page)
    • When pop-up window appears, check “Select ACS PWGTP”
    • Click “OK” … then click “OK” again in small confirmation window … this returns to the main window
  6. Double-click “RAC1P – Recoded race” variable
    • When pop-up window appears, check “Select ACS RAC1P Recoded”
    • Click “OK” … then click “OK” again in small confirmation window … this returns to the main window
  7. Double-click “POWSP – Place of work” variable (place of work):
    • When pop-up window appears, check “Select ACS RAC1P Recoded”
    • You only want 50 states and DC, so check “Deselect” for all values from “Puerto Rico” to end of the list
    • Click “OK” … then click “OK” again in small confirmation window … this returns to the main window
  8. Double-click “SOCP – occupation code” variable
    • When pop-up window appears check “Select ACS POWSP Place of work”
    • You only want 11 software and 2 hardware values, so click “Deselect all values” (right side)

  9. Double-click “HISP – Hispanic”
    • When pop-up window appears check “Select ACS HISP”
    • Click “OK” … then click “OK” again in small confirmation window … this returns to the main window
  10. Click “Step 2 – Data Basket” button (top of page)
  11. Click “Save selected variables codebook” (right side of page)
    • In the pop-up window, provide folder/directory location on your computer a name for the file to save the codebook text file … Note that you must change the name of file in the Data-1A.R file to match the file name you specified.
    • Click “Save selected variables code book” (right side of page) … pop-up window closes and returns to main window
  12. Click “Download” icon (top of page)
    • Select “Comma Delimited”, … then click “Get Extract”
  13. To save the specifications for downloading this data faster next time click “File” (top left of window),
    • Click “Save As”,
    • In pop-up window, provide folder/directory location on your computer a name for the file (.fsf) in which to save the DataFerret script file (.fsf)
    • The next time you visit the DataFerret you can click “File”, then click “Open” to load the .fsf file … The Data Basket will be loaded with the variables you specified in the script you saved … at which point you delete some variables (“Delete” key on upper right side of page) … and/or click the “Step 1” button to add new variables/values to your basket.
  14. I downloaded the PUMS sample data for 2014 for race and thirteen specified occupations into a file called Race-CA-DC-GA-NC-NY-WA-Occupation-PUMS-2014.csv in the report’s repo. I downloaded the ACS codebook into Race-CA-DC-GA-NC-NY-WA-Occupation-PUMS-2014-CodeBook.txt. Then I copied and pasted the codes for state, sex, occupation, and race into separate .txt files
